LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Advocates and insurers are experiencing a surge of inquiries across Michigan as the deadline approaches to sign up for insurance under the federal health care law.

People who start an application before midnight Monday can enroll for this year in the insurance exchanges created under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Enroll Michigan marketing coordinator Kelsey Maccombs says the group has received "a flood of calls."

Telephone wait times were under two minutes early Monday for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, but officials there expect that to eventually increase to 10 minutes.

Advocates and insurers also have dozens of in-person help centers set up across the state.

The federal health insurance website was down for four hours Monday, which officials attribute to a software bug unrelated to application volume.
