Frank Cugini is a 13-year Grand Ledge resident and has brought up four kids through the Grand Ledge school district.

"We live here because we can let our kids go run around, hang out with their friends and run around the neighborhood," Cugini said.

That may all be changing.

On Monday, a 9-year-old Grand Ledge student was walking home when a man pulled up beside her and attempted to abduct her. The girl got away unharmed, but the incident has sent shockwaves through Grand Ledge.

"You don't hear about these things in Grand Ledge," Cugini said.

The alleged incident happened near the corner of Jefferson and Russell, just blocks from downtown Grand Ledge. The incident prompted police to send out another safety warning.

"It can happen to anybody," Trooper Marco Jones said. "It can be of any age group and at this day and time we ask that everyone be aware of their location and what's around them. You may want to call a parent or somebody and let them know where you are."

Trooper Jones says even putting a phone up to your ear and pretending to make a call is a good idea. There is one extra thing Trooper Jones is urging residents and students to be mindful of.

"We always encourage students to walk to school and home from school with a group of friends," Trooper Jones said. "Even if it's just one or two other people there's safety in numbers."

Trooper Jones added that there have been four attempted kidnappings take place in the Lansing area since June of 2011, more than in year's past. Despite the increase, Jones does not know whether the incidents are related.

Police are looking for a red Chevy full-size pickup in good condition. It has a black snap-on cover and a Michigan State Spartans helmet on the tail gate. The license plate has the Spartan "S" on it.

Police don't have much of a description for the driver, just that he's fairly young, clean shaven, thin and was wearing an orange hat, blue jeans and a black leather Michigan State coat.
