Gov. Rick Snyder says he'll push for a significant investment in improving Michigan's roads and bridges next year.
Snyder told The Associated Press on Tuesday the state needs up to $1.5 billion for transportation infrastructure upgrades. He said prospects are slim that the Legislature will agree on such a program this year because of other pressing issues, but there should be a good opportunity in early 2013.
The Republican governor discussed the transportation initiative in an interview during the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual policy conference on Mackinac Island. He said the state has a number of options for new revenues, including vehicle registration fees and fuel taxes.
Snyder described the improvements as "preventive maintenance." He said in the long run they'd cost less than doing nothing and letting roads deteriorate.
