Gov. Signs Bill Ending County Treasurer's Bonus

DETROIT (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation that ends a bonus to longtime Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz tied to fees associated with delinquent property taxes.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report that Snyder signed the bill Friday. It eliminates a loophole that allowed Wojtowicz to get the incentive that has amounted to about $540,000 in at least 15 years.

The Legislature passed a measure in the 1970s authorizing the extra pay for county treasurers but it was phased out for those who came into office after 1999. Wojtowicz continued to take it.

Chief Deputy Treasurer David Szymanski tells the Detroit News the bonus was negotiated to be part of the office's compensation for borrowing money so local governments could pay bills while the county collected delinquent taxes.
