FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a Flint-area police officer has fatally shot a motorist after the man tried to flee a traffic stop.
State police Detective Sgt. Mark Pendergraff says the shooting happened after the Flint Township officer "felt threatened" during the stop Wednesday evening. Pendergraff says two shots were fired by the officer. He says the motorist was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The Flint Journal reports a child was in the vehicle along with another man and a woman, but they weren't injured.
Flint Township police Lt. Jim Baldwin says the officer was removing people from the car when one tried to flee and drove toward the officer. The shooting is under investigation by state police. The identity of the dead motorist wasn't immediately released by police.
