When four Delta Township firemen sat in the chairs to have their heads shaved, at Reno's West, Sunday, Steve Funk was first in line.

"It's a great way to raise money for a great cause," said Funk.

It's part of the St. Baldrick's Head-Shaving Event to help raise funds for childhood cancer research. Funk, a paramedic or the department, got the ball rolling on the event.

"It's our inaugural event, we've never done this before," said Funk. "It's the first time that we've set anything up like this. We've been very happy with it and pleased."

More than 20 firefighters collected pledges and grew out their hair for months before having it shaved in front of family, friends, community members and seven-year-old Luke Fochtman of Okemos.

"They had lost of hair, so I was really surprised that they would shave it off," said Fochtman.

When Fochtman was three, he was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer of the soft muscle tissue.

"It's awful. It's your worst nightmare come true. I mean, as his mom, I'm supposed to know and understand everything that's happening in his body," said Monica Fochtman, his mother. "To hear that he had cancer, and that it was stage four, it changes your life."

Thanks to successful treatments, Fochtman, who is now an ambassador for St. Baldrick's, has been cancer free for two years. His family hopes the success of Sunday's event helps others in need.

"It's been super successful and I just want to keep going with it," said Funk, who hit his $10,000 goal early on in the day. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
