Fifth Graders Spend Day at Safety Patrol Picnic

Hundreds of fifth-grade safety patrols got to spend Wednesday at the annual Police and Fire Field Day and Safety Patrol Picnic.

The students checked out police horses, emergency rescue helicopters, and armored vehicles at Hawk Island Park.

Organizers say the picnic helps build ties between children and the various departments that keep them safe.

"We have community resource officers, school resource officers here and having that relationship between them and the police and fire is absolutely essential for everything that happens in the future," said Sgt. Jeff Weiss of the Ingham Co. Sheriff's Office.

About 200 volunteers were expected at Wednesday's event, from Kiwanis Club members to UAW retirees to local business leaders. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
