John Lee Davis was arraigned Thursday on two new misdemeanor charges, including fleeing and destruction of property.

As he was being sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail on a shoplifting charge, the 21-year-old Lansing man bolted out of the courtroom and ran into a nearby cornfield.

State, county and local law enforcement officers quickly surrounded the 700 acre field. Officers on the ground and above in a helicopter searched for a couple of hours before a dog found Davis hiding in the tall rows of corn. He surrendered without incident.

Now he faces more than 30 days in jail, if convicted on the new charges. The fleeing charge could bring up to a year in jail.

The destruction of property charge stems from the damage done to the courtroom during the escape. A court spokesperson says that could total up to $1,000.

Davis remains in jail.
