YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -- Eastern Michigan University is completing security upgrades as students return for fall classes.

The Ann Arbor News reports Saturday that the work is aimed at improving campus safety.

The Ypsilanti school is spending $485,000 to upgrade security cameras. Eastern Michigan has more than 500 surveillance cameras on campus. Another $273,000 is being spent on two lighting projects.

The school's public safety office is being renovated to make room for 10 new police officers. Public Safety Chief Bob Heighes says his department has "been very successful keeping crime low on the campus."

Eastern Michigan has increased off-campus patrols following the December 2012 bathtub drowning of student Julia Niswender in her apartment and last fall's shooting death of football player Demarius Reed during a robbery in an apartment building.
