Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the city's riverfront fireworks show and Thanksgiving Day parade will disappear without outside funding.
Bing said Friday at a news conference that a grant that helps pay for both events won't be available next year.
Bing says neither event is in the fiscal year budget that begins July 1. He says Detroit's financial crisis doesn't allow the city to fund the events, and it needs to "reach out to others."
Parade Co. President Tony Michaels says the events "touch the hearts" of the community.
Meanwhile, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee says police are working to deter gangs who have planned to cause trouble at this year's fireworks and will ask the City Council to pass an emergency curfew.
The fireworks are scheduled for June 25.
