Detroit Schools Open Doors to Parents Saturday

DETROIT (AP) -- More than 90 Detroit public schools will be open Saturday for tours as part of the district's DPS Open Doors Day and open enrollment period.

The district says in a release that parents will have a chance to meet with school principals, staff and parent leaders.

Classroom visits, technology and lab demonstrations and teacher presentations also will be available. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The district's open enrollment ends May 10.

Parents also can visit several schools in one day on free shuttles from the district's seven Parent Resource Centers.

The district is competing with city charter schools and suburban systems for students. Detroit's enrollment dropped below 100,000 in 2008.
