Two Detroit area school districts have canceled classes for Thursday to allow teachers to protest in Lansing.
The Taylor School District and Warren Consolidated Schools announced the closings on Monday after hearing many of their teachers were taking the day off.
In a letter posted on the Warren Consolidated Schools website, Superintendent Robert Livernois said the district will be closed "just like when we have a snow day."
"While I understand this is somewhat unusual," Livernois went on to say, "my number one priority is student safety and without an adequate number of staff members, we cannot hold school."
The teachers intend to join other union members to protest right to work legislation at the Capitol.
