The city of East Lansing is offering no-fee holiday refuse collection through December 28. During this time, residents can dispose of extra holiday refuse without the use of a yellow City trash bag. Refuse is collected on residents’ normal collection day only, except where changes are necessary due to the holidays. Yard waste and bulk items are not included. All bags must weigh no more than 40 pounds. Residents are encouraged to help keep disposal costs down by using the City’s drop-off sites for cardboard and boxboard. The City’s year-round recycling drop-off site is located at 1800 E. State Road and its seasonal site for cardboard and boxboard is located at Patriarche Park, corner of Alton Road and Saginaw Street.
Residents can recycle their live-cut Christmas trees curbside or at a number of drop-off sites throughout the community. Curbside collection of trees will take place on Monday, Dec. 31 and Monday, Jan. 7. Advance phone request and stickers are not required. Drop-off sites will be available through Friday, Jan. 11 at the following locations:
Patriarche Park – parking lot off of Alton Road
Emerson Park – Arbor Drive entrance
Henry Fine Park – parking lot off of Winchester Drive
Valley Court Park – south of the Valley Court Community Center
White Memorial Park – parking lot at Pebblebrook Lane
If the tree is greater than 6 feet in length residents are asked to cut it in half. Residents are also reminded to remove trees from bags and all holiday decorations and tree stands.
“The trees that are collected will be chipped and used as mulch in East Lansing parks,” said East Lansing Environmental Services Administrator Catherine DeShambo. “This is one of many things community members can do to be green this holiday season.”
