The debate over gun control and push for tougher gun laws come from top leadership in Washington and spans to mayors from around the country. Now, citizen group, "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America" is taking action too. The organization was formed the day after the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Retired psychologist and grandmother Linda Brundage heads the effort in Mid-Michigan.

"I've known about gun violence and been sitting on the couch and with Sandy Hook I was like enough is enough," said Brundage.

The group is pushing for universal background checks, ban of assault rifles and high capacity magazine clips. More than 200 people from the organization will travel to Washington D.C. next Wednesday to meet with their local representatives in Congress. Brundage will be going with her granddaughter, a senior at Okemos High School.

"I'm going to have kids of my own one day and I want them to be able to grow up in a country where you don't have to worry about a man walking into school with an assault rifle," said 17-year-old Anna VanArsdale Hoot.

However, some lawmakers say Michigan already has checks and balances in place and more gun control is not the solution to violence.

"We have controls on honest hardworking people. The controls are in place, you never can totally control a bad guy," said Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge.

Sen. Jones says the focus should be on better mental health treatment. Brundage agrees that's an area deserving more attention, but they're still ready to make their voices heard in D.C.

"There's about 200 of us going but if it's only me and my grandma, just us two, we could still make a difference," said VanArsdale Hoot.
