Researchers are going to study whether the healthy ingredients in dark chocolate... can be delivered in pill form to help heart health.
Research shows flavanols found in dark chocolate can reduce a person's risk of hardening the arteries and other vascular diseases.
So experts will conduct a study involving eighteen thousand participants to see if these ingredients can help cardiac health in pill form.
Joann Manson, preventive medicine chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston will lead the study.
She says participants will either get two capsules of cocoa flavanols or dummy pills per day for four years.
The study will be funded by Mars Incorporated along with the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
And while Mars has a patent on making cocoa flavanol pills, these are not the ones that will be used in the study.
None of the ones currently on the market have as much active ingredient as the pills that will be used in the study.
