LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says ice anglers and other recreational users of Pere Marquette Lake should be cautious during icebreaking work over the next week.
Pere Marquette Lake is at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River, which enters Lake Michigan at Ludington in the western Lower Peninsula.
The tug Spartan and barge Spartan II are traveling through ice on the lake to deliver cargo. The tug Manitou is assisting.
They will make two trips, stopping at Ludington's Occidental Chemical Facility.
Officials say ice fishermen should remove their ice shanties and equipment from these areas. Recreational users of the ice should plan their activities carefully and avoid shipping channels.
