The Capitol lawn turned pink Sunday afternoon thanks to more than 5,000 survivors and supporters racing for a cure.
The 10th anniversary Mid-Michigan Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure raised more than $300,000, surpassing the organization's goal. The many men, women, and children enjoyed music, face painting, and a kids' sprint before the Survivor Walk and official race.
37-year-old Michelle Dunlap, a 4-year survivor, has climbed the steps of the Capitol the past four years during the survivor walk. Every time she has also been accompanied by her now 4-year-old daughter Ilana.
"We call her our miracle baby," Dunlap said. "I had my surgery and chemotherapy treatments while I was pregnant so I could be here for her after she was born."
Dunlap was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer when she was 30 weeks along.
"It was a tough lesson to learn, but I'm stronger for it," Dunlap said. "Now I'm here celebrating and just savoring every moment."
Her husband and 5-year-old daughter were also at the race for support. Dunlap said she couldn't have done it without them.
Up to 75 percent of the funds raised will stay in Mid-Michigan for programs like free education and mammograms for those who can't afford it.
"I've met with women who are directly affected by these grants, and I'm so happy we can provide that in this community," said Mid-Michigan Board President, Kristen St. Marie.
Dunlap looks forward to coming back next year and setting a good example for her daughters.
"I don't take life for granted anymore," Dunlap said.
