LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A bill would rename part of Interstate 96 in honor of a western Michigan police officer who was run over and killed by two suspects fleeing from a bank robbery.
WOOD-TV and The Grand Rapids Press report the bill introduced Tuesday in Lansing would rename the portion of Interstate 96 within the Walker city limits as the "Officer Trevor Slot Memorial Highway."
The bill has been sent to the Senate Government Operations Committee for consideration.
The 41-year-old Slot was killed Oct. 13, 2011, while laying down spike strips to stop a speeding sport utility vehicle on I-96 about 15 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. The suspects crashed after Slot was hit. They were fatally shot by police when they fired at officers.
