A teen from Jackson is one of 40 finalists being recognized for the impact they've made on their community. Michael Funkhouser-- a senior at Jackson High School who will be attending U-of-M in the fall-- was nominated as "Youth Volunteer of the Year" as part of Governor Snyder's service awards. We met Funkhouser last fall, when he organized a leaf-pickup event that raised $2,000 dollars for his school's food drive. In addition to that, he also founded a mentoring program that matches seniors with freshman to help them adjust to high school.
A couple of local companies are also being recognized for their community involvement. American One Credit Union in Jackson and Jackson National Life Insurance Company in Lansing are both finalists for the "Corporate Community Leader Award."
