(LANSING) - Mayor Virg Bernero today announced that he will deliver his eighth State of the City Address on Monday, January 28, at the historic Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot on the site of the $182 million Lansing Board of Water and Light Cogeneration Plant Headquarters Project in REO Town.
The theme of Bernero’s speech – “Lansing Powered Up!” – will review his administration’s accomplishments during 2012 and look ahead to the opportunities and challenges of 2013.
Bernero selected the BWL REO Town project site as the location for his annual address because the new natural gas-fired power plant is the latest harbinger of the city’s progress, both in terms of economic development and in creating a cleaner, greener environment. The new power plant is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to the utility’s existing coal-fired plants.
The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot, built in 1902 and located adjacent to the new power plant, is in the final stages of being completely restored to its original grandeur. When it opens to the public this fall, the depot will serve as the meeting chambers of the BWL Board of Commissioners, as well as a community meeting space.
The mayor’s address begins at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live by WILX TV-10. The event is open to the public and the doors will open at 6 p.m. Guests are asked to arrive at the venue no later than 6:30 p.m. to accommodate the requirements of the live television broadcast.
