Authority Honored for Cleaning Up Michigan Landfills

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) -- A Macomb County organization's innovative cleanup of former landfills on the site of an entertainment venue and nearby land now has been recognized by an environmental business association.

The nonprofit Environmental Management Association recently gave its Environmental Achievement Award to the South Macomb Disposal Authority. The authority hired a firm that used plants and trees as vertical pumps to eliminate and prevent landfill leakage.

The project cleaned up the polluted site on which the Freedom Hill Amphitheatre was built and an area nearby that will be used for soccer and other recreational purposes. The venue was closed during the cleanup.

The authority is a joint venture of five cities. Its duties include taking care of closed landfills previously operated by the authority.
