Attorney General Opposes Bill Decriminalizing Marijuana

By  |

Attorney General Bill Schuette told Wednesday night he opposes a bill that would decriminalize marijuana in Michigan. Schuette, who's worked to tighten the state's medical marijuana law, said Michigan shouldn't go down the road towards legalization because it would expose kids to more-potent drug use.

The decriminalization bill was introduced Wednesday by Democratic representative Jeff Irwin of Washtenaw County and is supported by Republican Mike Shirkey of Jackson County. Both argue the state spends too many tax dollars putting marijuana users through the criminal justice system with little to show for it. Irwin also sees it as an issue of personal freedom.
