Amash Faces Primary Congressional Challenge

A western Michigan investment adviser will challenge U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in next year's Republican primary.

Brian Ellis on Tuesday accused the second-term congressman of turning his back on conservative principles by voting against Paul Ryan's proposed budget and not voting for an oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Amash spokesman Will Adams calls Ellis' announcement "bizarre" and says he isn't worried.

Amash is a libertarian-leaning conservative who has gained a bigger profile from battles with House Republican leadership and his stand against the collection of Americans' phone records. But he's upset some business leaders in his Grand Rapids-area district who want more pragmatic representation.

Republican state Sen. Mark Jansen says he's been asked to challenge Amash and hasn't ruled it out.
