HOUSTON - NASA has selected 8 new candidates to train to possibly become astronauts, and Albion College graduate Josh Cassada is one of them.

More than 6,000 applications were considered for the 2013 astronaut candidate class, which is the second largest number of applications NASA has ever received. Cassada is a member of the Albion College class of 1995.

The 39-year-old former navy pilot received his undergraduate degree from Albion. Cassada has advanced degrees from the University of Rochester in New York. Cassada is originally from White Bear Lake, Minnesota. According to NASA's website, this class will receive "a wide array of technical training at space centers and remote locations around the globe to prepare for missions to low-Earth orbit, an asteroid and Mars."
