Negotiators for Eastern Michigan University and its faculty reached a tentative contract agreement Wednesday morning, less than 30 minutes before classes were to begin.
Members of the Eastern Michigan chapter of the American Association of University Professors had gone on strike at midnight.
Mark Higbee is a member of Eastern Michigan's AAUP executive board. He says faculty members headed for picket lines were told to go to their classrooms instead.
This is the first day of classes for Eastern's 25,000 students.
Details of the contract aren't available yet. Higbee says a ratification vote by the campus union's 631 members will be held as soon as possible.
