Eighty-nine year old Lee McCoy is alive, but in serious condition after 38 hours of being out in the elements.

He was found beyond some brush in a swampy area a half-mile from his home on Oregon Street in Blackman Township Tuesday morning. He went missing Sunday night at 8:30 when he went on his usual walk. When McCoy didn't return, his wife called authorities.

A K-9 search team worked overnight into Tuesday but had to stop and regroup around 6:30 a.m. Around 10:30 a.m., with better winds helping the dogs pick up the scent, a dog named Tigger led rescuers to McCoy.

"She was pulling us through some underbrush where we were saying, 'you gotta be kidding-- you can't get back in there,'" said Kim Veldheer of K-9 One Search & Rescue. "We kind of followed (Tigger) and she was in the swamp area with him when we got back there."

McCoy has Alzheimer's Disease and may have become disoriented on his walk.

"I would say he didn't know where he was," said Veldheer. "He was definitely pretty tangled in the area he was in and could not have come out on his own."

McCoy was flown to UM Hospital with severe dehydration and hypothermia, caused from being submerged in the water which was actually kind of cold.

K-9 One is a statewide volunteer search and rescue team.
