According to the East Lansing Police Department, 41 people were arrested Friday night in East Lansing. Charges included alcohol possession, public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Police say they normally arrest 20 to 30 people a night during the university's first weekend before classes, but they say the increased number of bookings are not due to increased problems, but just stricter enforcement.
Police say they are putting people in jail at the first offense and not giving warnings. They say they didn't see any results from giving out warnings in previous situations.
The MSU Department of Public Safety says they had less arrests and signs of on-campus intoxication on Friday. They say it may be due to strict dormitory rules prohibiting alcohol.
