Governor, Legislature Still Working on Budget

Governor Granholm and Republican legislative leaders are still working on a possible budget agreement for the fiscal year that begins October 1.

The Democratic administration had been scheduled to meet with GOP leaders on the budget Wednesday afternoon, but it was canceled. The two sides will try again Thursday.

They're trying to resolve an estimated $1 billion deficit in the state's nearly $40 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts October 1.

Recent negotiations have focused on a few issues, including reducing some education funding for wealthy school districts and intermediate school districts, and refunding some of the state dollars that had been cut for public universities.
