State Lawmakers Propose College Help for Vets

State House Democrats have announced legislation that would help veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars pay for college.

The package of bills would mean a reimbursement of up to $2,000 a year for veterans who served in either war from any branch of the military or reserves.

It would be an extension of a reimbursement already offered to the National Guard.

The legislation also would allow the children of first responders to receive a tuition waiver worth up to $2,800 a year.

Representative Aldo Vagnozzi of Farmington Hills is the lead sponsor of the package. He estimated the cost of the new assistance at $900,000.

The bills are still being drafted.
