A source says that contract talks between the United Auto Workers and the Detroit Three could run beyond a Sept. 14 deadline because so many issues are unsettled.
The source is familiar with the talks and spoke on the condition of not being identified because the talks are private.
One of the unsettled issues is the companies' desire to pay the union to take over retiree health care.
Chrysler, Ford and General Motors have proposed paying the UAW a portion of the companies' 90 billion dollars in unfunded retiree health care costs.
They want the union to set up trust funds to pay all future costs.
So far, the UAW hasn't given its position on the trusts.
