The U.S. Forest Service is deciding whether hikers and off-roaders share trails or go their separate ways.
The agency is taking public comments until mid-September on proposed new rules for managing motorized vehicles in national forests and grasslands. Each forest would have to set aside areas for those vehicles' use.
All-terrain vehicles, motor bikes and snowmobiles have used designated trails in the Huron-Manistee forest since the 1980s. But a forest service spokesman says the booming sport of mountain biking has been allowed on some of hiking trails.
Now Huron-Manistee managers are revising the forest plan, which they hope to complete by 2006.
