Amtrak Service Faces Uncertain Future

A state lawmaker says a bill awaiting Governor Granholm's signature could shut down two state-subsidized Amtrak lines someday.

The supplemental appropriations bill would require the state to give bus companies the same amount of money it gives Amtrak. That would come to $7.1 million in the coming fiscal year.

State Representative Lauren Hager says that could play havoc with the state budget and lead to cancellation of the Amtrak subsidy.

Amtrak says it's too early to say what would happen to passenger rail service if Granholm signs the legislation. The governor is reviewing that portion of the bill.
