White House Science and Technology official Kei Koizumi made a special trip to Michigan State University for a close-up look at the latest research and high-tech facilities.

"It's always great to be able to see in a single visit the exciting variety of research that's going on in physics and biomedical sciences, economics and health," said Koizumi, the assistant director for Federal Research and Development at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

President Obama's Recovery Act funneled close to $70 million into MSU's research programs. While the economy is struggling to recover, the Koizumi said the president is committed to expanding research opportunities and advancing technology.

"If we are going to get out of this crisis in better shape than when we entered, we need to make investments in the future. We need to be in a new high-tech place with more highly skilled jobs and use energy in cleaner ways," said Koizumi.

Koizumi's visit wasn't simply to check up on the stimulus dollars at work.

"Our faculty will have a chance to ask questions and influence some of the decisions in terms of what research should be funded through the federal system," said Ian Gray, the vice president for research and graduate studies at MSU.

Koizumi had a brief tour of campus including a visit to the Cyclotron at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The legendary machine has helped bring MSU to the forefron of nuclear science research.

"When you build those pieces for the Cyclotron you can being to really understand," said Koizumi. "And you can do cutting edge research by understanding how it works."

Koizumi said the research being done at MSU must continue because it's vital for the future.
