Traffic violations would cost Michigan motorists an extra $5 under a plan that could soon face a vote in the state House.
A Michigan State Police budget that depends on raising roughly $6 million through the additional fines passed the House Appropriations Committee on Thursday. The legislation faces an uncertain future because both Democrats and Republicans have concerns about parts of the spending plan.
Some lawmakers have joined the State Police in opposing a provision that would close the agency's Detroit post and reduce road patrols in Wayne County. Troopers would be reassigned to other posts but the office closing would save money.
State Police say the plan is detrimental to public safety and adds to the burdens of law enforcement staffs.
