Northwest Cancels Hundreds of Flights Over the Weekend, A Few in Lansing
Will the cancellations end soon -- and what is the airline doing about it?

It's been a rough few days for some Northwest Airlines passengers.
"My flight from Detroit to Lansing got canceled," Kelly O'Donoghue said.
O'Donoghue's flight was one of a few headed in or out of Lansing that got grounded over the weekend -- and one of the hundreds canceled in Detroit and throughout the Northwest Airlines system.
While many passengers like O'Donoghue got put on other flights, it's meant hassles for some Lansing travelers and lost connections for some going beyond Detroit or Minneapolis.
Airline spokesman Dean Breest tells us pilots not coming to work is the problem. The pilots union told members it doesn't think sick time is being used improperly.
Things are getting closer to normal as the workweek begins.
Capital Region Airport Authority spokeswoman Nicole Noll says no flights going to or leaving Lansing were canceled Monday.
Still, the airline did cancel at least 37 flights out of Detroit Monday, according to flightstats.com
If this all sounds familiar, you're not imagining things.
Northwest Airlines had some of the same problems at the end of last month. Breest says the airline is working to prevent them from happening next month.
Laid off pilots are training to come back to work and the airline plans to hire more pilots, he said. In addition, four percent of the airline's flights in August will be cut, a move designed to make sure extra pilots are on hand in case some don't show up for work.
Those cuts are not expected to directly affect Capital City Airport. But as it looks to recruit other airlines, are all those cancelations a sign that Northwest is too unreliable?
"I would not say that," Noll told News 10. "The most important thing for us is to continue developing our existing relationships with carriers that we currently have."
Noll says she thinks the troubles at Northwest will pass.
