Refunds on Knapp's Gift Certificates

The unexpected closing of Bill Knapp's restaurants last week left many people holding unusable gift certificates.

And though reimbursement is unlikely, customers can try to get their money back by notifying Bill Knapp's in writing.

A photocopy of the gift certificate and the person's name, address and the date of purchase, should be sent to Bill Knapp's.

The Battle Creek company closed all 29 of its Michigan and Ohio locations on Aug. 20. It is under bankruptcy protection.

Bill Knapp's cited low customer turnout, a failed revitalization effort and the absence of a buyer as reasons for the shutdown.

Reimbursement isn't likely for gift-certificate holders because they are near the bottom of the list of people who get paid.

Creditors given priority include the Internal Revenue Service and lawyers on the case.
