NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York University student from Rochester Hills has drowned on spring break in Florida after a powerful rip current dragged him out to sea.
Authorities say 20-year-old Michael Finney was playing catch with friends in the water off Jupiter Beach on Friday when the current swept them 80 yards from shore.
A good Samaritan managed to rescue Finney's roommate, Shreshth Dugar. But by the time the Samaritan dragged Finney to the beach, the NYU junior was unconscious and not responding. Finney was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
An NYU spokesman said the university is mourning Finney's loss.
