Somber moods and not a single spoken word greeted 26-year-old Jackson Police Officer James Bonneau.

More than one thousand officers from around Mid-Michigan paid their respects Friday for a fellow officer. Bonneau was shot and killed early Tuesday morning after responding to a domestic dispute call.

"He was a wonderful young guy," says Sgt. Andy Williams from the Jackson Police Dept.

Colleagues mourned Bonneau's death but also celebrated his young life.

"He was kind of a quiet guy," says Lt. Elmer Hitt of the Jackson Police Dept. "I think most people would tell you that. One thing I respected him for was he had a very level head. And he knew what he wanted to do. He was one of those guys, if you gave him something to do, he'd carry it out in a professional manner."

"This was the start of his career. He knew what he wanted to do. He was good at it, he was thriving. It's just a tragedy all around," says Williams.

For one Lansing officer, Friday's service was an opportunity to say goodbye to a former classmate.

"I attended the Mid-Michigan academy with Officer Bonneau," says Officer Mark Stanley of the Lansing Police Dept.

Stanley says the loss is devastating because Bonneau had his whole life ahead of him.

"It's very hard-hitting. He's one of the first officers I know to lose their life. It's just really hard," says Stanley.

Those who knew Bonneau say he died with honor, doing what he loved most.
