Area park staff says the Fourth of July is traditionally one of the busiest times of the summer season. To prepare, more lifeguards are being added, and police will be patrolling the waters to make sure people are staying safe.
Five lifeguards will be on duty each day at Lake Lansing Park. Brian Collins, Ingham County Assistant Parks Manager, says safety checks will be conducted each hour on the hour. In addition, a sheriff deputy will be in the park while another is in a boat in the water.
The Lansing Police Department’s dive team will be on the Grand River for the weekend and also the following week during the Common Ground Music Festival. Sgt. Joe Brown, LPD Dive Team Supervisor, says the team will be looking for boaters, especially children, not wearing lifejackets. Anyone 16 years old or younger is required to have one on.
