Michigan Boat Sales Sinking

Boat sales and registrations in Michigan have been sinking in recent years.

Blame the state's sputtering economy and high fuel prices.

There are also fewer places to dock boats.

Ed Mahoney of Michigan State University's Recreational Marine Research Center Boat says boat sales are down ten percent this year nationwide and an estimated 12 to 15 percent in Michigan.

Fuel prices have hurt by hovering around three and a half dollars per gallon.

The state is losing marinas because of the growing value of coastal property for other purposes.

Michigan no longer leads the nation in boat registrations.

The state fell to third two years ago behind Florida and California.
