MSU Provost Lou Anna Simon will become the university's president when Peter McPherson steps aside at the beginning of next year.
Simon was the unanimous choice of the school’s Board of Trustees. She will immediately assume the title of president designate and will retain her title of provost. She will begin her three year term as the 20th president of Michigan State on January 1.
Simon became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1993, the same year the board of trustees selected McPherson as president. She has a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Student Personnel and Counseling from Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
She earned a doctorate in Administration and Higher Education in 1974 at Michigan State.
During her tenure as Michigan State's Chief Academic Officer, Simon because known for her strong support of the idea that land-grant universities should be a partner with their communities.
