"The first thing i wanted to do was bring it here."
It was an easy decision for Drew Miller to bring the Stanley Cup home to the Lansing area and to Sparrow Hospital.
"Just seeing the smiles and the excitement they had when you come and hang out with them even for just 15 minutes to an hour," said the Anaheim Ducks forward and Stanley Cup Champion.
He spent more than an hour taking pictures, making room visits, and signing autographs.
"It was pretty cool. It was a lot bigger than i thought," said 12-year-old patient Ellesse Lehman. "We're kind of stuck in here just painting pictures and watching movies so it was nice."
Drew is no stranger to the Children's Miracle Network at Sparrow, having started the Spartan Buddies program while he was playing hockey at MSU.
"It kind of gives them a chance to get away from the difficulties and things that they're going through at that time in their life," Drew said. "They go to sneak away from that and kind of have fun."
Drew and his family went through a similar circumstance with their cousin, Matt, who battled leukemia. Matt is now cancer free and that experience helped Drew's brother, Ryan, start his own foundation in Buffalo where he plays hockey for the Sabres.
"Watching what he went through, watching how it affected our family. We really thought the best thing was to create a foundation that really addressed normalcy in life," Ryan said.
He hopes to expand his Steadfast Foundation into Lansing within the next few months.
"Even though they're fighting a disease, it doesn't mean their life is on pause."
It was a proud moment for the Miller family. Not just to see Drew as a champion, but to see both players giving back so much to their community. Their father, Dean, looked on with pride.
"They're good boys. I think they're everything a pro athlete should be."
