Pregnancy Vitamin

A fatty acid found in coldwater fish or supplements called DHA is needed for the healthy development of brain and nerve cells in fetuses and newborns, it is also proving positive for expecting mothers.

A recent study shows, out of 20 moms, the higher the levels of DHA, the more quiet the sleep patterns. This could also lead to a more mature central nervous system.

Doctors say DHA isn't proven to dramatically improve intelligence but may later lead to a brain boost in the child's life.

Researchers say the best source of this nutrient include coldwater fish like salmon, tuna, flounder, haddock, herring and sardines. They also recommend mothers incorporate DHA supplements into their diet at least three times a week.

Research was conducted at the University of Connecticut and is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
