A new report by Education Trust finds that one in four teachers at public middle schools and high schools are assigned to teach subjects that do not fit their expertise.
According to the study, the problem is worse in schools that serve poor and minority students. Local school officials say it's a tough proposition to find qualified teachers for every subject in rural and urban areas.
Officials for Lansing schools say for K through 8, qualifications are much more general than at the secondary level. Teachers who are in a classroom that's not their concentration, have one year to go back to school for more credits.
If not, officials say schools will make changes and readjust schedules. They also say the word untrained is misleading.
They say most teachers who fit this category may be teaching from their minor not major. It doesn't mean teachers are not qualified.
