The Return of a Champion

By  |

There was something a little different about the Tony Dungy that came to Jackson Community College Friday.

A huge Super Bowl ring on his right pointer finger.

His hand may be a little heavier, but what his friends say is unique about Dungy is that's pretty much all that's changed.

For years now, Dungy, and long-time friends Lions coach Rod Marinelli and Bears coach Lovie Smith have supported the Wilbur Dungy Endowed Chair at Jackson Community College.

"The community... and the linkage with the Dungy family goes back a long way," college president Dan Phelan explains.

Tony's father Wilbur was the first black professor there. The goal now is to raise a million dollars for the science program Wilbur Dungy loved.

Dungy called the crowds who turned out for pictures and autographs "more than I expected." He says returning home, so rare nowadays, is "always very special."

The Super Bowl glow, still very much intact here, is simply a bonus for the fundraising.
