Walter French Likely to Close

Central Michigan University, the authorizer of Lansing's Walter French Academy, noted in a letter that it will no longer support Walter French's operations a charter school.

CMU put the academy on probation saying it would authorize it through 2005, but the letter nullifies that agreement.

In the document CMU says consistently lagging MEAP scores, financial difficulties and decreasing enrollment were part of it final decision.

The school needs an authorizer to continue operations. Authorization could be accomplished through a public school district, college or university.

CMU notes the Lansing school district could be an authorizing suitor.

News 10 spoke to Lansing schools about the story and they chose not to comment.
