The outside of this home on Shiawassee Street in Lansing is in the process of undergoing a makeover. It belongs to 35-year-old Kindra Jackson. A single mother of five, she entered the Greater Lansing Association of Realtors Curb Appeal Makeover Contest back in January.
"I've done a lot of work on the inside, and I thought maybe I'd have a chance of winning," Jackson says.
And win she did -- an exterior renovation worth $10,000 all for free.
She says, "It means a lot. I feel very fortunate and very blessed. It's just something I knew I wouldn't be able to do on my own."
"All of our finalists are just outstanding citizens. People who are not only living in their homes, but also give back to the community on a daily basis," says Vince Villegas of GLAR.
Roughly 30 families entered their homes in the contest. It's sponsored by GLAR in honor of its 100th anniversary.
"Our way of giving back was to locate three properties that were in need of curb apeal makeover," he says.
Three low and/or moderate income homeowners were chosen last month -- Jackson being one of them.
"It just makes me want to sit back and smile," says Jackson.
In the past week, renovators have fixed portions of the roof and repaved the driveway, which was uneven and broken into pieces. The rest of the home is expected to be completed within the next week.
"Thank you. I want to say thank you. It's just so wonderful," she says.
