Jim Campfield, Superintendent of Operations Maintenance, says the system usually performs just fine, but the recent rain is too much for the system to handle. Crews have been out around the clock pumping water and trying to maintain the damage in both homes and on city streets. Sandbags have been placed near Potter Park Zoo to stop the flow and throughout the city, emergency management teams are on standby.
The good news for now, the Grand River is receding and the Red Cedar River is expected to crest Tuesday.
