Couple cancels essay contest that offered $150K home as prize
MASON, Mich. (AP) -- An essay contest that offered a 960-square-foot house with a heated, in-ground pool as a prize has been canceled because not enough people entered, the owners announced Sunday.
Mike and Anne Dunivon were looking for 1,000 people to explain, in 250 words or less, why they should get the house, which had been on the market for $150,000. The entry fee for the "Own This Home In Mason Essay Contest" was $200.
The couple said they didn't even get half of the number of essays they had sought. They thanked those people who had entered the contest, and said all contest entry fees will be fully refunded.
"Thank you so much for believing and supporting an idea that we had to help someone own a home," the Dunivons said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that more people won't try something new."
Mason is located near Lansing, about 70 miles west of Detroit.
