The city of Lansing approved a $109 million general fund budget, but set aside one million dollars in hopes that the mayor’s office can find a way to avoid spending out of Lansing's reserve and rainy day fund.

Lansing city council members voted five to three to approve the budget but not without some controversy.

Some believe the city needs to hire more police, and others were not happy with the $1.8 million the council voted to take from both the reserve and rainy day funds.

As a result, the council agreed to put away one million dollars from job vacancy funding and future capital/infrastructure improvements, in the hopes the mayor's office can return with a plan that avoids taking away from the reserve funds.

The Mayor's office agreed to return with a plan September 15.
